The Dictionary
The Dukaw Project proudly presents Wdu — a growing dictionary of native Liberian languages. This branch of Dukaw focuses on preserving and promoting Liberia’s tribal languages by providing resources that support cultural appreciation, learning, and everyday usage.
The initial phases center on a few languages as we work to develop their alphabets and build a comprehensive dictionary of words and phrases.
The platform, however, is designed to expand easily. With the right content, new languages can be added within a few weeks.
This project is driven by dedicated volunteers who are passionate about celebrating and revitalizing Liberia’s linguistic heritage.
Use the links below to explore the Alphabet or to connect with us and join the volunteer team.
Together, we can build an invaluable resource that brings all Liberian languages to life for communities across the nation.
The goal of the dictionary project is to provide a central language platform with resources
that promote and facilitate learning of the Liberian languages to keep them alive and pass this aspect
of our identity to the younger generations.
Revitalizing the Languages
These dictionaries give community members, students, and teachers a practical tool for learning and using the language.
They make it easier to create lessons, practice vocabulary, and strengthen everyday use of a language that may have few fluent speakers.
Preserving the Languages
Working with different resources and experts, we are developing this dictionary to record the words, meanings, pronunciations, structures, and usage of our languages before they are lost. This digital format allows expansion into different formats like audio and video which support long-term language documentation and archival preservation.
Promote Cultural Identity
The dictionary project will include cultural meanings, traditional interpretations, and context that go beyond simple translations. This will lead to community interest and involvement to build a
platform that protects cultural identity, and gives native speakers control over how their languages are represented.
Improving Access and Usability
The online dictionary is readily available and can be accessed via phone, tablet or computers. Users can quickly search,
hear pronunciations, access example phrases or compare related words and languages without needing a printed book

The Dukaw Project is an informational initiative about the Republic of Liberia.
We cover Liberia’s history, government,

Our goal is creating and providing a portal with a wealth of information about Liberia for our audience
in Liberia and worldwide. Check us out and volunteer on any of our initiatives.
